The enclosed hematite concretions are nearly identical to those found on mars by the mars rover “opportunity.” Scientists named them “Martian Blueberries.” Since they need water to form, their discovery is an important proof water existed on Mars. These specimens, about 25 million years old, are unique to the red rock formations of Southern Utah and to the red planet Mars. On Earth, they are found in and around Zion National Park, Snow Canyon Sate Park , and in other locations with the Navajo sandstone formations. On Mars, Opportunity found them on a broad plain, Meridiani Planum.
